The Department of City Planning developed new zoning restrictions for parts of the Upper West Side which was approved by the City Council.  The zoning change is meant to restrict banks and large pharmaceutical chains from having more than 25 feet of store frontage on Broadway from West 72nd street through West 110th street. The storefronts on Amsterdam and Columbus Avenue are limited to a width of 40 feet.  However, Columbus Avenue is only affected from West 72nd Street through West 87th Street.  Existing stores are exempt from this new zoning restriction meaning that they are now grandfathered in.
